Forté Recipes: Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich

PB and Jelly

Everybody should enjoy a PB&J every now and then. And since you are advised to stay away from deli meat while pregnant, this is always a classic option when you need a quick sandwich for lunch. Not only does the peanut butter provide a lot of nutrition, the jelly adds the perfect amount of sweet for a pregnancy craving!

Whole Wheat Bread

I always use whole wheat bread when making sandwiches—both for the nutrition and the taste! One of the biggest nutritional benefits of choosing whole-wheat products is the increased fiber content. Fiber aids in digestion and increases satiety. This is especially important as it helps me make it to my next meal! Whole-wheat products also contain a significantly higher amount of minerals than white products do. These include iron, magnesium, and zinc.

Peanuts

At one point, it was thought that eating peanuts during pregnancy might increase the risk of a peanut allergy in the baby. But, that thought has since changed. A large study showed that women who actually ate peanuts during pregnancy had a decreased chance of having a baby with a peanut allergy. This is lucky for us because peanut butter is rich in healthy fats, protein, and fiber, all of which slow digestion and keeps you feeling full longer. It is also very high in niacin, magnesium, and vitamin E. Eating peanut butter has also been linked with better weight management and decreased risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
